Generative AI for Everyone

I've been going through Andrew Ng's Coursera course titled Generative AI for Everyone to help think through how to integrate AI concepts into courses I teach. It is intended to take 2-3 weeks to complete. As with most MOOC providers, you can go through the course for free, but if you want to take the quizzes/tests and obtain a certificate of completion at the end, it costs a bit. The following notes come from going through the first week.

Generative AI systems produce high-quality text, images, audio, and video.

Supervised learning is used for labeling things. For example, when an email comes in, an AI spam filter could label that email as spam or not. Or for self-driving cars, inputs from the car's sensors can understand the vector of other cars.

A Large Language Model (LLM) can take a prompt and use it to generate output. Supervised learning outputs the next word based on the first part of the sentence as the input.

An LLM can be used to answer simple knowledge questions or as a writing partner to help refine existing text or to generate new text based on the prompt. It can also be used to create something that has not been already widely done on the internet.

AI is a general-purpose technology, meaning it can be useful for many tasks rather than being limited to only specific situations.

Interfaces may be web-based, similar to how a web search functions, or application-based, where the AI function is integrated into another application.

When considering whether an LLM could do a certain task, consider if a fresh college grad could likely complete the task.

They are limited by knowledge cut-offs where certain information has not been used to train the LLM or hallucinations where it makes up information that it doesn't know anything about. There also may be limitations as to the input and output length.

The classroom is changing. Technology is transforming education, blending the old with the new.

The Old

Traditional classrooms have a charm and nostalgia. The social interaction, the structure (physical rows of desks but also the schedule of activities and teacher rules), the chalkboard, that cleaning solution smell. But they also have limitations.

The New

Digital tools—online platforms, virtual classrooms—are breaking barriers. They offer flexibility, accessibility, and personalized learning. They don't provide visceral connections or common classmate experiences.

The Integration

The challenge is combining these effectively. Here’s how:

1. Blended Learning: Mix in-person with online. The best of both worlds.
2. Interactive Platforms: Foster engagement and collaboration beyond the classroom.
3. Personalized Learning: Tailor education to individual needs using adaptive technology.

The Mindset

Imposter Syndrome and Writer's Block

This short video by Seth Godin is an instant classic for me.

Why do we have writer's block? What we actually have is a fear of being judged, a fear that our stuff won't be good enough, and so we say I don't have any ideas - I don't know what to say. No, you have plenty of ideas, but you're worried they're bad ones. The solution is simple - you just need more bad writing. If you do enough bad writing, it is inevitable that some good writing will slip through.

Making imposter syndrome go away is a difficult fool's errand, because the harder you try to reassure yourself and to rationalize, the worse it gets. The answer is to realize that you are an imposter and so am I. That when we feel like an imposter, it is a good thing, because it shows we are onto something. We're doing something that might not work. We're doing something that's worth sharing.

Remember that all models are wrong; the practical question is how wrong do they have to be to not be useful.

User Interface

I understand what this screenshot is saying, but they sure could have taken a few minutes to think through it and make it more clear, since not everyone will understand it. It took me a few seconds to figure out, which sometimes in our scrolling-scrolling-scrolling world is a few seconds too many.

The note at the top tells the user that the classic whiteboard is going away and that they should try the new whiteboard. Seems simple enough. Then below that, the link says "new whiteboard," which could make the user think that is the new whiteboard they were hyping above. Then the user sees "classic" in parentheses. So is it the new whiteboard or classic whiteboard I'll get if I click on that button?

Turns out it is a new instance of the classic (old) whiteboard. You have to click the "check it out" button to get the new whiteboard.

The word "new" is confusing, since it is used to refer to both a new instance of the old whiteboard and a new type of whiteboard.

Pros and Cons of Using an AI Text Generator Like ChatGPT

This time I asked ChatGPT to write an article about the pros and cons of using an AI text generator:

I asked ChatGPT to write me a blog post. I didn't give it any other prompts, and this is what it came up with:

AI

As a new semester begins in my business communication class, I wonder where we stand in the world of artificial intelligence. I had a great discussion with some of the other faculty members about how it is important to figure out where to go with AI engines that can write better essays than students can. At what point will students be able to simply input a few facts or even questions and have the technology instantly spit out something that they could hand in and get a better grade than if they took the time to write it themselves.

We briefly discussed the possible copyright or other IP ownership issues of using AI tools. Does ownership go to the person who programmed the AI or to the person who entered some text and hit a button?

Is there a way we can use this technology to improve writing but not completely replace the humans in the process? There has to be.

The two main tools from OpenAI right now ChatGPT for text and Dall-E 2 for images.

Ignoring it and hoping it won't go away is not really an option, but how can we use these tools to our advantage and not to the detriment of students? At the end of the day, they're just tools.

Security and NFC/RFID

An interesting post today from Bruce Schneier points to an article about hacking the MBTA CharlieCard (Boston's public transit system). I couldn't help but think back to Cory Doctorow's book Little Brother that came out in 2008. I reviewed it back in early 2009.

One of the major plot points includes the protagonists rebelling against an overreaching government by messing around with transit cards by reading and reprogramming them by simply bumping the reader against them in people's pockets. Apparently something more or less the same has been occurring since then up in Boston, made easier and easier with commercially available scanning equipment.

In the book, they were reprogramming cards to make it harder for the government to use people's travel pattern data against them. In real life, people are just getting free rides.
